[Verse 1: Whitney Houston]
You said you'd be here by 9
Instead, you took your time
You didn't think to call me, boy
Here I sit, trying not to cry
Asking myself why you do this to me, mmm, now, baby

[Pre-Chorus: Faith Evans]
Sincе you're not around for me
To tell you, baby, facе to face
I'm writing you this letter
And this is what I have to say

[Chorus: Whitney Houston, Faith Evans & Kelly Price, Faith, Whitney]
All I really wanted was some of your time
Instead, you told me lies when someone else was on your mind
What'd you do to me? (What'd you do?)
Look what you did to me (Ah baby)
I thought that you were someone who would do me right (Do me right)
Until you played with my emotions and you made me cry (Made me cry)
What'd you do to me?
Can't take what you did to me

[Verse 2: Whitney Houston]
Now I see, that you've been doing wrong
Played me all along and made a fool of me, baby, ah
You got it all wrong to think that I wouldn't find out
That you were cheating on me, baby
How could you do it to me?

[Pre-Chorus: Kelly Price]
Since you're not around for me
To tell you, baby, face to face
I'm writing you this letter
And this is what I have to say, oh

[Chorus: Whitney Houston, Faith Evans & Kelly Price, Kelly, Whitney]
All I really wanted was some of your time
Instead, you told me lies when someone else was on your mind
(All you did was lie to me, baby)
What'd you do to me? Look what you did to me
(Can't believe what you did to me)
I thought that you were someone who would do me right
Until you played with my emotions and you made me cry
What'd you do to me? (Why'd you do it?)
Can't take what you did to me
(You didn't have to do it to me, baby)

[Bridge: Whitney Houston]
Ooh now, this is the Heartbreak
Welcome to the Heartbreak
This is the Heartbreak Hotel
Why, why'd you do it?
This is the Heartbreak Hotel

[Outro: Whitney Houston, Faith Evans & Kelly Price, Whitney]
All I really wanted was some of your time
Instead, you told me lies when someone else was on your mind
What'd you do to me?
(All I really wanted)
Look what you did to me
(It's all I really wanted, baby)

Whitney Houston

Known across the pop culture spectrum as the “Queen of Pop” and “The Voice” for her mezzo-soprano octave, Whitney Elizabeth Houston left an indelible impression upon pop culture. She is one of the most successful artists of all time, with more than 200 million albums sold worldwide.

Born August 9, 1963, Houston grew up singing as part of the gospel choir at her local church. She was surrounded by powerful voices in her own family (mother Cissy Houston, cousin Dionne Warwick, godmother Darlene Love, honorary aunt Aretha Franklin). After working as a model and commercial actress in the early 1980s, Whitney was discovered during a New York City nightclub performance, which led to her signing a contract with Clive Davis at Arista Records. Whitney’s first song was a duet in 1984 with Teddy Pendergrass on “Hold Me.”

She released her self-titled début album the following year, which catapulted her into superstardom as the album topped the Billboard 200 for 14 non-consecutive weeks before becoming the top-selling album of 1986, eventually achieving diamond status in the US and selling over 22 million copies worldwide. The singles “Saving All My Love For You,” “How Will I Know,” and “Greatest Love of All” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and achieved platinum status. The music video for “How Will I Know” received heavy rotation on MTV, which was uncommon for Black women at the time. She took home the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Grammy Award for “Saving” in 1986; her performance at the Grammys of “Saving” later won her an Emmy award. She also won seven American Music Awards between 1986 and 1987.
