Coroner is a thrash metal formed in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1983. The members of the band Tommy Vetterli and Marky Edelmann were originally roadies for the Swiss extreme metal band Celtic Frost on the Tragic Serenades tour. In 1986, they cut their own tracks, recording their demo Death Cult with Tom G. Warrior of Celtic Frost on guest vocals. Vocalist and bass player Ron Broder joined the band. Their musical style is a combination of thrash metal and progressive music, with classical, avant-garde, jazz, and industrial elements. They have been called the Rush of thrash metal.

They continued as a three-piece band and released their first full-length album, R.I.P. in 1987, then quickly followed it with Punishment for Decadence in 1988. With their third studio album, No More Color, Coroner raised their standards and started to feature elements of the avant-garde progressive thrash of their later albums. In 1991, Coroner released their fourth album Mental Vortex. Many expected the album to push the band’s career to the next level and introduce them to a wider audience, but whether due to the arrival of alternative rock in the 1990s and musical climates changing things just didn’t play out that way. Their fifth full-length album, Grin, is considered a major departure from Coroner’s early records, moving to greater experimentation. Coroner officially disbanded after a farewell tour in 1996.

The band reunited in June 2010. Tommy Vetterli, Ron Broder, and Marky Edelmann began playing live again. Edelmann left the group two years later and was replaced by Diego Rapacchietti.
