Leslie Cheung (1956-2003) was a hugely successful actor and pop singer from Hong Kong. Born Cheung Fat-chung, he chose the name “Leslie” because of his admiration for the British actor Leslie Howard. He broke off his studies at the University of Leeds to become a singer, signing to a label in 1977, though his musical career would not take off until years later. As an actor, he was known for such films as A Better Tomorrow, Days of Being Wild, and Farewell My Concubine. He died by suicide in Hong Kong, leaving behind a note saying he had suffered from depression. He is considered a seminal figure in the history of Cantopop.
