Marvin Hamlisch (1944-2012) was born in New York to Viennese Jewish parents and was still a teenager when he was hired as a rehearsal pianist for Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl. He is one of 12 performers to have won an EGOT, winning an Emmy (for multiple Streisand TV specials), an Oscar (for The Way We Were and The Sting), a Grammy (for “The Way We Were”), and a Tony (for A Chorus Line, for which he also won the Pulitzer Prize). In addition to his composing, he also made numerous recordings as a pianist and served as an orchestra conductor for several ensembles.
