[Verse 1]
I'd be lying if I said I was completely unscathed
I might be proving you right with my silence or my retaliation
Would I be letting you win in my non reaction? Yeah
How would I explain?
How would I explain this to my children if I had them?

[Chorus]
Because I can't not
Because I can't not
Because I can't afford to be misread one more time

[Verse 2]
Would I be whining if I said I needed a hug?
Would you feel slighted if I said your love's not enough?
How can I complain?
And how can I complain when I'm the one who reaches for it?

[Chorus]
Because I can't not
Because I can't not
Because I can't not walk without my crutches
Because I can't not
Because I can't not
Because I can't help wonder why you ask me

[Bridge]
To all the unheard wisdom in the schoolyard
You think you're the right ones
You think you're the charmed ones, I'm sure
And how can you go on with such conviction?
And who do you think you are? Why do you question me?

[Chorus]
Because we can't not
Because we can't not
Because we can't help laugh at underestimations
Because we can't not
Because we can't not
Because we can't afford to be misled one more time
Because we can't not
Because we can't not
Because we can't not help without your willingness

[Outro]
Why do you affect me? Why do you affect me still?
Why do you hinder me? Why do you hinder me still?
Why do you unnerve me? Why do you unnerve me still?
Why do you trigger me? Why do you trigger me still?

Alanis Morissette

Alanis Nadine Morissette was born on June 1, 1974, in Ottawa, Canada. At age 6, she began taking piano lessons, and by the time she was 9, she was writing her own songs.

When she was 11, Morissette joined the cast of a Nickelodeon children’s show called You Can’t Do That on Television, and saved up her earnings. In 1987, she used them to self-release her first track, “Fate Stay With Me.” The song caught the attention of record label MCA Canada; at age 14, Morissette signed a contract with the company. She released a self-titled album, Alanis, in 1991, which went platinum. Quickly following up the success of her first album, Morissette released Now Is The Time a year later, though it did not reach the same level of popularity.

In 1994 Morissette moved to Los Angeles teamed up with industry veteran Glen Ballard, and she began to approach songwriting more organically.
