[Intro]
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes
You'll find you get what you need

[Verse 1]
Well, I saw him today at the reception
Standing there with a glass in his hand
I knew he would go meet his connection
His cancels that all turn and sing

[Chorus]
Said you can't always get what you want
No, you can't always get what you want
Said you can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime, you just might find
You get what you need
Ooh hoo, hee, you get what you need, yeah

[Verse 2]
He dressed up, go to the demonstrations
To get his fair share of abuse
He wanted to be an overnight sensation
And if he don't, he's gonna blow a 50-amp fuse, oh oh oh

[Chorus]
You can't always get what you want, oh yeah
You can't always get what you want, no no
You know you can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, you just might find
You get what you need, get what you need

[Verse 3]
He goes to the drugstore near the station
Some say to get his prescriptions filled
He's practiced at the art of deception
No one can tell what he really feels, yeah yeah yeah

I was standin' in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided to have a soda
"Whatcha favorite flavor?", "Cherry red"
And I sung my song to my friend Jimmy
And he said one word back to me, that was "Dead"
I said

[Chorus]
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want, ow ow ow
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, say you just might find
You get what you need, get what you need, oh yeah

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You try sometime, just might find
You get what you need

[Bridge]
(Overnight sensation) Overnight sensation
(Education) Education
(There's no relation)
(Need a vacation) I need a vacation
(And we need elation) And we need elation
(With some cooperation)
(And we need the patience, hoo)

[Chorus]
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want

[Outro]
It's a feeling, off the ceiling
Gon' get on down now, to the real nitty gritty, yeah
That bass is pumpin'
But you can't get it, you can't get it now
(You can't always get what you want)
You know that you can't always get what you want, what you want, what you want
(You can't always get what you want)
Girl, you, you can't always get what you want, oh yeah, no no
(You can't always get what you want)
But do you know, second-best will stand a chance, yes it is, oh, yes it will

Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin is both a 20th and 21st century musical and cultural icon known simply by her first Aretha. She is the reigning and undisputed “Queen Of Soul” with a legacy that spans five decades. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Aretha began her career singing gospel at her father, minister C. L. Franklin’s church as a child. In 1960, at the age of 18, Aretha embarked on a secular career, recording for Columbia Records with modest success.

After moving to Atlantic Records in 1967, she released a steady string of US top ten hits through 1973 including “Spanish Harlem”, “Chain Of Fools”, “Baby I Love You”, “Since You’ve Been Gone”, “Daydreaming”, “The House That Jack Built”, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", ”Think“ and her first chart-topper “Respect” – a song that also won Aretha her first of 18 Grammys. During this time, several of her songs were also successful overseas.

By the mid-70s, Aretha’s commercial success waned and she left Atlantic for Clive Davis' Arista Records in 1980. Her 1982 song “Jump to It,” returned her to the top 40 for the first time in six years. 1985’s Who’s Zoomin' Who? got her back into the top 10 twice with its title track and “Freeway Of Love”. Four more songs reached the top 40 through 1986.
