Songwriter: Vic Chesnutt

[Intro]
One, two, ready, go

[Verse 1]
Pleasure is melting like chocolate
My blue ribbon gumption is gone
All my gravy must have soaked into something

[Chorus]
And the world

[Verse 2]
The filthy steps, the cold concrete
The phony earth below my feet
The ancient odor of the streets

[Chorus]
Yes, the world, it is a sponge
The world

[Verse 3]
And when the crisis passes
When the coast is clear
I'll be buffed down to a liquid

[Chorus]
And the world, it is a sponge
The world, it is a sponge
The world

[Verse 4]
Throughout this entire ugly outing
I've been mumbling the convex of what I should be shouting
But I'll soon be silent, you'll soon hear nothing

[Chorus]
'Cause the world, it is a sponge
The world, it is a sponge
The world, it is a sponge

R.E.M.

R.E.M. were an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 by singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry.

Berry quit the band in April 1997, as they were getting together to record demos for the album Up. He was not replaced on a permanent basis, but the band used an assortment of drummers in his place.
