Singer-songwriter, actress, dancer and comedienne Valerie June Carter was born June 23, 1929 in Maces Spring, Virginia. The daughter of Maybelle Carter and Ezra Carter, she would go on to be known as June Carter Cash. At the age of ten, she began performing country music with The Carter Family and then later, along with her sisters Helen and Anita, Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters.

On July 9, 1952 June married country singer Carl Smith. They became parents on September 26, 1955 to Rebecca Carlene Smith who would go on to become known as Carlene Carter. June and Carl divorced on December 6, 1956. A year later, on December 11, 1957, June married Edwin “Rip” Nix. They also had one daughter together. Rosanna Lea “Rosie” Nix, who was born July 13, 1958. Carter and Nix then divorced in 1966. In Franklin, Kentucky on March 1, 1968, June married country music legend Johnny Cash. This marriage lasted over 35 years, until June’s death on May 15, 2003 in Nashville. Her cause of death was complications following heart-valve replacement surgery. Four months later, on September 12, her husband Johnny also passed away. The following month, on October 24, June’s daughter Rosie was found dead on a bus. The cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning.
