[Hook]
Play me some music
When my money's low
And I don't have
Nowhere to go
Play me some music
In the ghe-e-tto
Whatever problems I have
I'mma just let go

[Part 1]
Play me some music
When I arise
Thank you lord
For openin' my eyes

Play me some music
While I take my bath
Make me sing
Make me la-a-augh

Play me some music
While I cook my food
Keep me dancing
In a real good mood (yea)

Play me some music
While I iron my clothes
I can't let down
All the fine ass hoes

Play me some music
While I wash my car
Ride around
Like a movie sta-a-ar

Play me some music
While I make my cash
Sellin' weed
Beer and hash

Play me some music
While I pimp my hoes
Ride around
On rims and [?]

Play me some music
Music music music
Music music music

Play me some music
After a hurricane
Give me shelter
From the rain

Play me some music
When a family member dies
And all I can do
Is hug someone and cry

Play me some music
When my woman leaves
And all I have
Is memories

Play me some musi-i-ic
When I can't laugh
And the IRS
Takes all I have

Will you play me some music
For all the illegal stops
And everyone
Who gets robbed by the cops

Play me some music
When I drink my beers
Wipe my tears
And spread my cheers

[Bridge]
Play me some music
Music music music
Music music music

[Part 2]
Haddiesburg, Mississippi, 'member Jefferson Davis?
Confederate guy, that used to enslave us
If you don't - its cool
But I went to his elementary school

Pop lockers, break dancers, rap masters
Free slaves walkin 'round with the ghetto blasters
What the hell is that noise?
Beat boxin performed by the fat boys

I took out the trash, I mowed the yard, studied hard
Got A's on my report card
Mom and dad at the pad told way to go
To the sto' and bought me a radio

All you ol'skool hip hop vets
Remember radios with the two cassettes
I shut the door and let the bass boom
It's a party going on in my room

[Hook]
Play me some music
When my money's low
And I don't have
Nowhere to go
Play me some music
In the ghe-e-tto
Whatever problems I have
I'mma just let go

[Part 3]
Playing friends with my friends in a dark blue [beamie?]
Five minutes to funk, funk with Whodini
Had fun, bumpin' Run DMC
See the cops? You better fucking run like me

Kept buying tapes, built my collection
Rub my chin, then I make a selection
BDP, Ice-T, Eazy E

Then one day, I thought perhaps
I Grab the pen, and write my own text
Feeling the mic, feeling the mic
Killing the mic, killing the mic
Better then - better then
Any rapper you like, Any rapper you like

I got high, then I dropped out of highschool
Because I got high, now I'm rich, fool
Hang around rich fools
And they' bitch rules - when I switch shoes

I never thought I would lose my daily music, because of greed
More money, than what I need, indeed
Oh well - what the hell homes
Turn the beat down, talkin' on the cell phone

Hang up, who the fuck is callin' next
If I don't talk, then I got's to text
Remember back in the 80s
All you needed was a pager, for the ladies

Post Y2K - Way more stress
A cellphone - a slave GPS
I used to think having cellphones was cool
But people wanna call, while I'm jammin, fool

Tryin' to make money fightin' with my wife
Music snuck out my life
Try to play music when I get the chance
Gained so much weight I can hardly dance

[Hook]
Play me some music
When I'm feelin' low
And I don't have
Nowhere to go
Play me some music
In the ghe-e-tto
Whatever problems I have
I'mma just let go

[Part 4]
Broke out my CDs
Records, tapes, MP3's
Play that, play that, play this, play this
Make me a dope ass playlist

Turn up the bass punk don't be no goof
No auxiliary, use the bluetooth
I live in the woods, so don't come around
Hell no I won't turn my music down

Went to BestBuy and bought a stereo
Plug it in to the wall and now here we go
So if you get a phone call turn it down low
Take it outside y'all

I used to play music, befo' I got rich
Now I talk on the cellphone and fuckin bitch
I see you phone call, I decline and refuse it
Fromie don't play that shit

[Hook]
Play me some music
When my money's low
And I don't have
Nowhere to go
Play me some music
In the ghe-e-tto
Whatever problems I have

Afroman

Joseph ‘Afroman’ Foreman began writing songs and handing them out to his friends on cassette while in the eighth grade. At 25 years old, he released his first album, 1999’s Sell Your Dope. Soon after, he moved from LA to Mississippi with the mission to ‘get away from competition and sell to actual people’, releasing his sophomore album Because I Got High in 2000 on T-Bones Records. Its title track, written hastily after a friend showed up and interrupted him on an ambitious day and insisted they instead get high, was the last song he had recorded for the album. Soon after, Afroman left the music business.

At the same time, the file-sharing software Napster – heavily used at the time to share and distribute music for free – was at its peak of popularity, and the album’s title track became popular with its users. Universal Records caught wind and signed Afroman to a six album deal and released it as a single on July 6, 2001.

“Because I Got High” immediately became one of the most-requested songs across the nation, growing even larger after syndicated morning radio show host Howard Stern began airing it regularly, helping to make it ‘the most requested song on the radio in the country’. Further boosting its popularity was its inclusion in the film (and soundtrack to) Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back and MTV’s eventual agreement to air a modified, less-controversial music video for the song. It peaked at #13 in the US, and topped the charts in ten countries overseas. Its album The Good Times reached #10 in the US.
