Songwriter: David Bowie

[Verse 1]
We passed upon the stair
We spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there
He said I was his friend
Which came as some surprise
I spoke into his eyes, "I thought you died alone
A long long time ago"

[Chorus]
Oh no, not me
I never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world

[Verse 2]
I laughed and shook his hand
And made my way back home
I searched for form and land
For years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazeless stare
At all the millions here
We must have died alone
A long long time ago

[Chorus]
Who knows? not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world

Michael Stipe

John Michael Stipe, born January 4, 1960, is an American artist best known as the lead-singer and primary lyricist of alternative rock band, R.E.M. He is recognized for his cryptic lyrics and “mumbling” vocal style, most apparent on R.E.M.’s debut album, Murmur. As time went by, his lyrics and singing became less eccentric and eventually he even started putting his lyrics on the liner notes for R.E.M.’s albums. Since their breakup in 2011, Stipe has remained mostly quiet, but has returned to music with features on other people’s songs and by releasing a solo single, “Your Capricious Soul” in October, 2019.
