[Intro: The Time]
Mmm
Ooh, aah
Ooh, aah

[Verse 1: Morris Day]
My summertime thang
Make me feel alright
I feel good every night, yeah
Treat me like a lover would
And it feel so good, ooh

My summertime thang (Summertime)
Dancin' on the floor
Don't stop, let's do some more
We could have a total ball
And I'm happy once and for all
My summertime thang

[Bridge: Morris Day]
Ooh, ah, ho
I think about you when I'm sleeping
I think about you when I'm at the mall
I think about the summer I first met you
Most of all, I think about the time you met me

[Verse 2: Morris Day]
My summertime thang (Never lets me down)
Never lets met down
Keeps working all year 'round
This thang is my one desire
It takes me higher
I say, it takes me higher, higher, higher

[Bridge: Morris Day]
(Oh) Summertime
(Oh)
Oh, oh, summertime
Said make me feel, make me feel, make me feel alright

[Interlude: Morris Day & Jerome Benton]
Yo, what's up M.D.?
Meet me at the mall, there's a cutie workin' there you will not believe
Ten minutes?
Naw, two
Alright, cool
Cool?
Alright, cool, I'll meet you there
Cool

[Refrain: Morris Day]
My summertime thang
Make me feel alright (Alright, alright)
Uh, I feel good every night
Higher, higher, higher

[Interlude]
Jimmy Jam? No Jimmy Jam, I...
Naw, no, that... naw, I need some fire
I got burned, got to cook with gas
(What about Teflon, man? What do ya... what do ya feel about that?)
No, it's got to be cast iron skillet (Cast?)
To be cast iron skillet (Cast iron?)
(Too many cooks in the kitchen)
(What?)
(That don't know how to cook it right)
Hold it. We already did that, we already did that. Wait a minute now
(Naw, I like that)
Naw man, we already did that, baby
(Naw)
(Find Jerome a girl or somethin', man. Get him outta here)

[Refrain: Morris Day]
Make it funky, da da da
Make it funky, da da da
Make it funky, da da da
Make it, make it, make it, make it
Make it, make it, make it, make it
Make it funky, da da da
Make it, make it, make it, make it
Make it funky, da da da

[Instrumental break]

[Outro: Morris Day]
Wawk! Hallelujah! Whoa-oh-oh-oh!
What time is it?
What time is it?
'Bout time to go
My summertime thang
My summertime thang
My summertime thang

The Time

The Time grew from the seeds of the Minneapolis music scene in the early 1980’s, galvanized by the creative drive and commercial success of rock-soul juggernaut Prince. The band began as the fruit of a wager Prince made with band leader Morris Day over the song “Partyup” (originally by a band called Enterprise). After the song’s success, Prince agreed to help Morris put together a band.

The nucleus of The Time consisted of drummer Jellybean Johnson, keyboardists Jimmy Jam and Monte Moir, and bassist Terry Lewis, pulled from their local band Flyte Tyme. Guitar demigod Jesse Johnson endeavored to join Prince’s band, but that band didn’t need a guitarist, so he shuffled into The Time’s lineup. Jerome Benton was a promoter from the aforementioned band Enterprise, and was eventually brought on as a comic foil to Morris Day for their stage act.

The band’s debut self-titled album featured two Top 10 R&B hits with “Get It Up” and “Cool.” Their follow-up What Time Is It? delivered an even higher chart peak with “777-9311”. But the band truly hit their stride once featured in Prince’s blockbuster music film Purple Rain. Their songs “Jungle Love” and “The Bird” from the film would become huge R&B and dance hits and propel their third album Ice Cream Castle to #3 on the R&B charts.
