Songwriter: Alec Benjamin

[Verse 1]
You've been hanging your conscious on the fence
'Cause you can't hold it
An empty promise laid to rest
A life is stolen
And there will be no consequence
For what you've broken
Don't you know, what your father said?

[Pre-Chorus]
We are the only, we are the brave
We are America, but we are to blame

[Chorus]
Stand up, stand up, can you hear me now?
All I, all I really want now is
Your voice, your voice screaming out loud, saying:
"We can make it, oh, we can make it"
Fist up, fist up, don't put your hands down
All I, all I really want now is
Your voice, your voice screaming out loud, saying:
"We can make it, oh, we can make it"

[Verse 2]
We've been biting our tongues for far too long
And they know it
They told us that hope would carry on
They really had us going
There will be no consequence
For your sinful hypnosis
Don't you know, what your father said?

[Pre-Chorus]
We are the only, we are the brave
We are America, but we are to blame

[Chorus]
Stand up, stand up, can you hear me now?
All I, all I really want now is
Your voice, your voice screaming out loud, saying:
"We can make it, oh, we can make it"
Fist up, fist up, don't put your hands down
All I, all I really want now is
Your voice, your voice screaming out loud, saying:
"We can make it, oh, we can make it"

[Outro]
I drew a line out in the sand
And then I gave it up
I watched it turn to dust
America
Another year has gone again
I draw another one
And this time I won't run
America

Alec Benjamin

After getting dropped by Columbia Records at 18 years old, singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin built a following by playing in parking lots outside of Shawn Mendes and Troye Sivan concerts. The Phoenix, Arizona native caught the attention of Jon Bellion, earning a songwriting credit on Bellion’s debut album and later joined him on tour.

To build on the momentum, Benjamin began uploading new songs to his YouTube channel at a rapid clip and eventually earned on a viral hit with “I Built a Friend” and a deal with Atlantic Records.

Benjamin connects to listeners by incorporating using his life struggles to tell stories and give meaning to his songs. You can see this in “Let Me Down Slowly,” “Paper Crown,” “I Built a Friend,” “Death of a Hero,” and “If We Have Each Other.”
